The federal government has set aside $160,000 to help preserve historic collection that has local and national significance.
The special collections and archives department of Brock University will use the money to improve the safety and preservation of its Niagara Collection, which includes important War of 1812 materials. The total project cost is $382,000.
The grant was made through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.
"Our government is proud to invest in Brock University's James A Gibson Library," James Moore, Canada's minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, said in making the announcement Tuesday.
"It is our duty to help preserve Canada's historic collections for generations to come."
With upgrades to the archival space, the Brock library will be able to collect additional resources of high research value, university officials say.
Renovations began on Oct. 22 and are expected to finish in late February. The space is closed to staff and students for the duration of the work.
